Daniel Luis Ramirez is an instructional coach and mathematics teacher at Roosevelt High School in Portland, Oregon. As an instructional coach, Daniel has concentrated his efforts on improving inclusive and equitable instructional practices; building a robust dual-credit program; starting and maintaining an academic ally peer-tutoring program; and encouraging the department to think critically and politically about the intersection of marginalized students’ experiences and mathematics education.

 His current focus is centered on connecting curricular and instructional practices with, and creating meaningful and empowering spaces for, male students of color at Roosevelt. Many of these initiatives were born from his recent completion of a Ph.D. in Critical and Sociocultural Studies in Education where he focused on the sociopolitical microstances of mathematics educators in an urban comprehensive high school. Through personal narratives, Daniel identified key instructional actions that engendered more equitable teaching in mathematics as well as larger structures that can prevent the realization of more politicized teaching.

 Before moving to Portland, Daniel worked at the Academy of Arts and Academics where his focus as a teacher was on project-based and arts-integrated learning. At the Academy of Arts and Academics, Daniel created a Student VOICE leadership group that explored and facilitated workshops on issues of race in education. Earlier in his career, Daniel worked as a middle school science teacher in Miami, Florida and in Alexandria, Virginia. Daniel received a Bachelors of Arts in Biology and Spanish and a Masters in Teaching from Willamette University.
